OAKSIDE ACRES
We are amateur members of AQHA, AMHR, AMHA, Georgia Federation of Saddle Clubs, and Horse 'N Around Club. We participate in local events such as parades, trail drives, and shows with our big and miniature horses.
Oakside Acres is a small farm that has been involved with horses in the Middle Georgia area for over 20 years. We are located near Hawkinsville, Georgia. We started out showing our AQHA horses and never dreamed we'd get involved with miniature horses or showing at national level.
In 2002 all that changed. A miniature horse was given to Robin. Her mother, OJ, quickly fell in love with him and decided to keep him. She named him, Dude Where’s My Cart, aka "Dude", and registered him with AMHR. She started driving him and eventually got into showing him at local shows and then at AMHR shows. Dude was a natural and loved driving and picked up many ribbons at the shows they attended. Robin continued to show her big horses but when she saw an ad in 2006 for a colorful miniature yearling from Pick Pocket Farms, she decided to buy him. Pick Pocket's Coz for Applause, aka "Goober," is a dark bay blanket appaloosa.
Goober did very well at his first AMHR show. He won three firsts in Amateur Halter, two seconds and a fourth in Open Yearling Halter. He also won the Multi-Color Stallion/Gelding class placing first under all three judges. He showed again in June at the Area III Region show in Perry, Georgia, and placed second in the Multi-Color class and also placed in Amateur and Open Yearling Stallion classes. Dude placed in the ribbons with his driving classes and OJ and Robin realized both minis were qualified to show at AMHR 2006 Nationals, and decided to go and see what it was all about. At Nationals, Goober placed third in Multi-Color Stallions, and was such a good sport at being dressed up, he placed fifth in Adult Costume Class. Dude placed in the top ten in both Obstacle Driving, and Adult Costume. We had so much fun and met many wonderful people at Nationals.
The 2007 show season started at the March Winds show in Marianna, FL, where both minis did very well. In June, Goober and Robin won the All Around Amateur Award at the Area III Region Show in Perry, Georgia. His other accomplishments in 2007 include qualifying in first place to participate in the Georgia Federation of Saddle Clubs State Championship Show in Halter Stallions, by placing above both large and small halter horses. In December, he placed first and second in his first driving classes, driven dressage classes, at the Middle Georgia Sport Horse Association dressage show.
That September, we went to Nationals a second time. It was awesome. As a two-year old, Goober won the 2007 AMHR Multi-Color Stallion, over class, becoming a National Champion. He placed 8th in Open Two-Year-Old Stallions, 35"-37", and won Reserve National Champion in Adult Costume Class. Dude placed in the Top Ten in 4 classes: Amateur Ladies Showmanship, Ladies Western Country Pleasure Driving, Western Country Pleasure Driving 32” and under, and Adult Costume, under 34". We met more wonderful people, reconnected with the people we met the previous year, and couldn’t have asked for a better show.
In 2008 Robin continued Goober's driving training. In the spring, we took Dude and Goober to the April show and drove them in Western Country Pleasure Driving for the first time. Goober won his over driving classes and Dude won all of his under driving classes and you could tell Dude was feeling great. Unfortunately, a few months later, Dude got sick and passed away due to complications from Diverticulosis. We still miss him.
In June, we went to the AMHR show in Perry, GA, with Goober. He won his driving classes again. Despite loosing Dude, we decided to go to Nationals in 2008 with Goober. He was awesome. He was the 2008 National Reserve Champion Multi-Color Stallion, Over 34"; placed in the Top Ten for 3-Year Old Stallions, placed 3rd in Amateur Western Country Pleasure Driving (out of 23), placed 5th in Western Country Pleasure Driving, Ladies (out of 27), placed 9th in Western Country Pleasure Driving (out of 18), placed in the top ten for Open Obstacle Driving, and was Reserve Champion in Adult Costume. He also received a certificate from AMHR for being the Division B All-Star Champion Amateur Obstacle Driving Horse for 2008!!!
In 2008, OJ purchases Moon River See More Shine, a wonderful palomino under gelding, from Dolores Boysia. We call him Sunny because of his sunny disposition. He loves people and follows us around the pasture. He does parades and trail drives. We started his training and took him to some shows and he's done remarkably well for a beginner. He's a sweetie! Thanks, Dolores!
In 2009, we took both Goober and Sunny to Nationals. Goober has done it again. At Nationals, he won the Multi-Colored Stallion, over, class becoming a two time National Champion. He also placed 10th in Halter Obstacle, over, 5th in Obstacle Driving, over, and 5th in Golden Age Western Country Pleasure Driving, over. Even though this was only Sunny's third show and first National show, he placed 5th in Amateur Ladies Western Country Pleasure Driving, under, 6th in Adult Costume Class, under, and 10th in Golden Age Western Country Pleasure Driving, under.
Pictures of some shows can be found in the Gallery.
